Holiday Shipping Deadlines 2026: USPS, FedEx and UPS Dates

Picture a parent at a kitchen table on a Sunday night with a half-packed box: wool socks, beef jerky, a stack of letters from the kids. The box is going to a service member stationed overseas, and the plan was to mail it sometime before Thanksgiving.

That plan is already running late. The Postal Service’s recommended send-by date for its cheapest ground option to military addresses is this Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Everyone else has more breathing room, but less than the calendar suggests. Here are the dates the carriers have published, and what to do so a gift does not spend Christmas morning in a sorting center.

Quick answer

For delivery by Christmas 2026, USPS recommends shipping Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail by Dec. 17, Priority Mail by Dec. 18 and Priority Mail Express by Dec. 19. FedEx's last days run from Dec. 15 for Ground Economy to Dec. 23 for overnight. Military Ground Advantage mail should go by Nov. 4. UPS lists Dec. 21 for 3 Day Select, Dec. 22 for 2nd Day Air and Dec. 23 for Next Day Air.

Key takeaways

  • USPS lower-48 dates: Ground Advantage Dec. 17, Priority Mail Dec. 18, Priority Mail Express Dec. 19.
  • USPS Ground Advantage to APO, FPO and DPO addresses should ship by Wednesday, Nov. 4.
  • FedEx Ground dates depend on transit days, from Dec. 17 for five-day lanes to Dec. 23.
  • UPS's last days for Dec. 24 delivery: 3 Day Select Dec. 21, 2nd Day Air Dec. 22, Next Day Air Dec. 23.
  • Fake delivery texts were the most reported text scam of 2024, according to the FTC.

What are the 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?

Christmas falls on Friday, Dec. 25, this year. The U.S. Postal Service, FedEx and UPS each publish their own cutoffs, and they are not built the same way. USPS dates are recommended send-by dates for delivery before Dec. 25. FedEx and UPS dates aim for arrival by Dec. 24.

UPS is the outlier: it lists dates for its air services but not for UPS Ground.

Here are the domestic dates in one place, taken from the USPS 2026 holiday shipping page, the FedEx 2026 last-days-to-ship schedule and the UPS 2026 year-end holiday schedule.

Carrier and service Last recommended ship date
FedEx Ground Economy Tue., Dec. 15
USPS Ground Advantage (lower 48) Thu., Dec. 17
USPS First-Class Mail Thu., Dec. 17
FedEx Ground and Home Delivery, 5-day transit Thu., Dec. 17
USPS Priority Mail Fri., Dec. 18
FedEx Ground and Home Delivery, 4-day transit Fri., Dec. 18
USPS Priority Mail Express Sat., Dec. 19
FedEx Express Saver Mon., Dec. 21
FedEx Ground and Home Delivery, 3-day transit Mon., Dec. 21
UPS 3 Day Select Mon., Dec. 21
FedEx 2Day and 2Day AM Tue., Dec. 22
FedEx Ground and Home Delivery, 2-day transit Tue., Dec. 22
UPS 2nd Day Air Tue., Dec. 22
FedEx First, Priority and Standard Overnight Wed., Dec. 23
FedEx Ground and Home Delivery, 1-day transit Wed., Dec. 23
UPS Next Day Air Wed., Dec. 23
FedEx SameDay Thu., Dec. 24

Treat these as the latest safe dates, not the target. USPS puts it plainly on the same page: “The earlier you send, the better.” It also notes that actual delivery can vary with origin, destination and the time a package is accepted at the Post Office.

What are the USPS deadlines for military and international mail?

These come much sooner. For APO, FPO and DPO addresses, USPS lists Wednesday, Nov. 4, as the send-by date for Ground Advantage. First-Class Mail and Priority Mail to those addresses should go out by Wednesday, Dec. 9. Priority Mail Express Military Service has a Dec. 16 date, but USPS says it is only offered at selected military post offices.

International mail follows a similar pattern. USPS lists Wednesday, Dec. 9, for First-Class Package International Service and Priority Mail International to every region on its chart, from Canada and Mexico to Europe, Asia and Africa. Priority Mail Express International runs to Wednesday, Dec. 16.

Shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or a U.S. territory? First-Class Mail, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express use the same dates as the lower 48. Ground Advantage to and from those places carries a service expectation of 10 days or more, USPS says, so give it extra room.

USPS also flags that Hanukkah runs Dec. 4 to Dec. 12 this year. Gifts for the first night need to move well ahead of the Christmas dates in the table.

How do FedEx Ground deadlines work?

FedEx Ground and Home Delivery do not have a single cutoff. The last day depends on how many business days a package needs between two ZIP codes. FedEx says transit typically runs one to five business days within the contiguous U.S. and three to seven to and from Alaska and Hawaii.

So a five-day lane has to ship by Dec. 17, while a one-day lane can wait until Dec. 23. FedEx adds that its ground dates assume a regular scheduled pickup or a drop-off at a staffed FedEx location, and that the dates can change. Check your route’s transit time first.

On the holidays themselves, the FedEx holiday schedule lists modified service on Thursday, Dec. 24, including early pickups and some drop box closures. FedEx and FedEx Office are closed on Friday, Dec. 25.

What are the UPS holiday shipping deadlines for 2026?

For its air services, yes. UPS’s 2026 year-end holiday schedule lists these recommended last days to ship for delivery on Thursday, Dec. 24:

UPS service Last recommended ship date
UPS Ground No fixed date; check ups.com/ctc
UPS 3 Day Select Mon., Dec. 21
UPS 2nd Day Air Tue., Dec. 22
UPS Next Day Air Wed., Dec. 23
UPS Worldwide Expedited to Canada / Mexico Tue., Dec. 22 / Mon., Dec. 21
UPS Worldwide Express to Canada / Mexico Wed., Dec. 23 / Tue., Dec. 22

UPS delivers on Thursday, Dec. 24. Pickups that day are limited to Air and international Air shipments arranged by Friday, Dec. 18, and there is no UPS Ground pickup. UPS is closed for pickup and delivery on Christmas Day.

UPS gives no single Ground cutoff because transit time depends on the route. Look up your ZIP codes in UPS’s Calculate Time and Cost tool at ups.com/ctc. If you can’t check, our suggestion is to ship inside the same window as the USPS and FedEx ground dates, Dec. 17 or earlier.

Before you buy

  • Check the seller’s own holiday order cutoff, which can come before the carrier’s.
  • Find out which carrier and service your order will ship with.
  • Look for in-store or curbside pickup near the recipient as a backup.
  • Keep order confirmations and tracking numbers in one place.

How can you keep a package from arriving late or getting lost?

  • Ship early, not on the deadline. Every date above assumes normal conditions.
  • Check the address twice. Include apartment or unit numbers and the full ZIP code, and print the label when you can.
  • Pack for a rough ride. Use a sturdy box, fill empty space so items cannot shift, and cover old labels and barcodes on a reused box.
  • Add tracking, and signature confirmation for valuable gifts. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service recommends both in its holiday guidance.
  • Do not let a box sit on the porch. If you will be away, the Postal Inspection Service suggests Hold for Delivery, a delivery locker or a trusted neighbor.

How do you spot a fake delivery text?

The season brings a second kind of package problem: texts that claim a delivery failed. Fake package delivery messages, usually posing as USPS, were the most reported text scam of 2024, according to Federal Trade Commission data. Reported losses to text scams overall reached $470 million that year.

The FTC’s advice is short. Never click links or respond to unexpected texts. Check an order on the retailer’s own site or the carrier’s site, which you open yourself, and forward suspicious texts to 7726 (SPAM).

If a package is stolen from your door, the Postal Inspection Service asks you to save any camera footage and contact postal inspectors at 877-876-2455 or uspis.gov/report.

What should you do this week?

First, anything headed to a military address should be in the mail by Nov. 4 if you want to use ground service.

Second, finish online orders for out-of-town family in early December, so sellers have time to hand packages to carriers before the cutoffs. Our guide to finding deals and discounts online covers how to buy early without overpaying.

Third, if you are mailing food, pick items that can handle a few extra days in transit. Our roundup of food gifts recipients actually repurchase is a good place to start.

As for the box on the kitchen table: finish packing it tonight, print the label, and get it to the post office by Wednesday. The socks and the letters from the kids will have time to make the trip, which is the whole point.

Frequently asked questions

When should I mail Christmas cards in 2026?

For addresses in the lower 48 states, USPS recommends sending First-Class Mail by Thursday, Dec. 17, for delivery before Dec. 25. Cards going overseas by First-Class Package International Service or Priority Mail International should go by Dec. 9.

Do holiday shipping deadlines guarantee delivery by Christmas?

No. The USPS dates are recommendations, and USPS notes that actual delivery can vary with origin, destination and acceptance time. FedEx says its dates are subject to change, so shipping a few days early is the safest plan.

What if I miss the ground shipping deadline?

Faster services have later dates: USPS Priority Mail Express runs to Dec. 19, FedEx overnight services and UPS Next Day Air to Dec. 23, and FedEx SameDay to Dec. 24. They cost more, so compare that with buying online for pickup at a store near the recipient.

Is UPS open on Christmas Eve 2026?

Yes, with limits. UPS's 2026 schedule shows delivery for all services on Thursday, Dec. 24, but pickups only for Air and international Air shipments arranged by Dec. 18, and no Ground pickup. UPS is closed for regular pickup and delivery on Dec. 25.

How long does USPS Ground Advantage take to Alaska or Hawaii?

USPS says Ground Advantage packages to and from Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories carry a service expectation of 10 days or more. Its other services use the same holiday dates as the lower 48.
